Amanda’s Habitat Story
Amanda is the dedicated single mother of three children; two teenagers and Bella, a seven-year-old who plans to attend Princeton someday.
Amanda’s habitat story first began when she applied for our homebuying program a few years ago. She was initially denied but did not let that get her down. Amanda worked on her credit and applied a second time in 2018, and was accepted! She sought to get out of the rental home she was living in that had disconnected ductwork, moldy ceilings, and a leaking roof. It was cold and drafty, and the heater ran constantly to warm the house. During the holiday season when Amanda hoped to celebrate with her kids, she was stuck paying rent and a utility bill that was over $500 a month.
After completing 250 hours of Sweat Equity, Amanda and her children moved into her Habitat for Humanity home in July of 2019. This Christmas will be the family’s first Christmas in their new Habitat home. Thanks to Habitat for Humanity’s homebuying program, Amanda can afford her monthly mortgage and utilities and has money to spare for the holidays. Amanda is looking forward to this holiday season and says “It’s the first Christmas of so many to come. It’s where my kids can come back. It’s the beginning of the rest of them.”
For the first time, Amanda will have the funds for decorating and making Christmas magical for her children. Bella is especially excited about a new tree. She says “I want to get a big tree. As big as our roof! As big as we can!”
