Aaron And Carmen’s Habitat Story
Aaron and Carmen’s Habitat story began in 2016. They were living in a rental home that had black mold, a leaky roof, an AC that didn’t work. The couple was also in constant fear of the landlord deciding to sell the house. They would have to find a new place to live.
They heard about Habitat for Humanity’s homebuying program through a teacher who encouraged them to apply. Habitat accepted the application and chose Aaron and Carmen to partner with us in the program. Halfway through completing their Sweat Equity, Carmen became sick and had to visit the hospital. She remembers “I thought we were going to be done.” She feared that they wouldn’t be able to continue the process due to the medical bills.
Carmen contacted the hospital’s customer service to sort out their bill. They came to an agreement with the hospital, and Aaron and Carmen were able to complete their Sweat Equity. They spent their first Christmas in their new home and had an amazing experience hosting Christmas for the first time. Aaron recalls that “We were actually proud to have Christmas at our house. We used to be embarrassed to have people over. Here, we can have our whole family together.” Carmen loved that her oven worked and she could cook Christmas dinner with her dad.
Aaron and Carmen want other couples to know that this is possible for them and want to encourage everyone to “Just apply. You never know what will happen. It’s so worth it.”
