Shelley was humbled and very excited to get a call on March 31, 2020 to learn that she was the winner of our Backyard Bundle prize that was valued at more than $5,000. What a surprise! At the time, Shelley was recovering from foot surgery and was caretaking for her 91-year-old father.
As we know, by late March 2020, we were all navigating the beginnings of the COVID-19 pandemic.
SHELLEY SAID, “THIS YEAR STARTED OUT AND CONTINUES TO BE A DOOZY, BUT WINNING THE BACKYARD BUNDLE WAS A VERY BRIGHT SPOT IN MY WORLD.”
After winning, Shelley used the cash portion of the prize to pour a concrete patio. She then decorated with outdoor furniture, Big Green Egg, bird feeders, and outdoor speakers. She made an outdoor world for her and her father to enjoy.
Shelley and her father enjoyed summer days outside. They spent almost every evening on their new patio listening to the birds sing and children in the neighborhood play and laugh.
While 2020 was a rough year, it was particularly rough for Shelley. Not only was she a caregiver for her father, but she also works full time as an essential worker at a local nonprofit. Her mind was occupied with so much, but her new backyard brought her peace.
Shelley lost her father this summer. He made it to almost 92 years. She was so grateful to have won such a grand prize that she was able to share with her father during his last few months.
“THANK YOU FOR ALL THE WONDERFUL WORK YOU DO,” SHELLY SAID. “I PLAN TO CONTINUE SUPPORTING HABITAT SPRINGFIELD IN THE WAYS THAT I’M ABLE TO CONTRIBUTE. I WAS LUCKY IN 2020. HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN SAY THAT?”
