PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release

Local Habitat for
Humanity Affiliate to Announce Receipt of $150,000 NSP Funds and Donation of
Six Lots from Metropolitan National Bank to Help Fund Project ReHabitat
Habitat for Humanity of Springfield
will announce on Wednesday that it is to receive $150,000 in Neighborhood
Stabilization Funds (NSP) through the City of
Springfield’s HUD economic relief program. These
funds will be used toward the purchase of foreclosed homes in the
Greene
County area that will be
renovated and then purchased by Habitat partner families through Project
ReHabitat.
Volunteers, sponsors, and Habitat
homeowners will gather for the Habitat for Humanity of Springfield, Missouri
Annual Meeting and Recognition Luncheon in the Clarion Hotel
Convention Center at
11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 27,
2010 to celebrate these exciting achievements.
Since 1988, Habitat Springfield has
made possible safe, decent housing for more than 470 people from Greene County
and worked with countless community sponsors and volunteers to build houses
and change lives. Through partnerships with the
Greene
County community, Habitat Springfield
built five homes and rehabilitated two in the Springfield area during 2009. With the
donation of six in-fill lots from Metropolitan National Bank, a lot donated
by Temple
Baptist
Church, as well as three
foreclosed homes purchased with NSP funds, Habitat Springfield will focus
its resources on Project ReHabitat throughout 2010, providing homes for at
least ten Greene County families.
Habitat
Springfield will also announce that it is to dedicate all of its
2010 tithe monies to the Habitat for Humanity International earthquake
relief effort in Haiti. This donation will supplement
the building of at least six homes in the devastated country where Habitat
International has been working for over 26 years.
At a time when the economy and home
building was in a deep recession, Springfield’s Habitat for Humanity
Affiliate still was able to build and rehabilitate seven homes in 2009 and
reported zero foreclosures on
previous homes, and even saw an increase in donations and purchases through
the Habitat ReStore – the store that sells new and gently-used building
materials to the public.
Habitat for Humanity will award eight
“Golden Hammers” during the luncheon.
These awards recognize the outstanding supporters who made Habitat’s
progress possible during this difficult economic year.
2009 Golden Hammer award recipients
include Metropolitan National Bank, Consumer Credit Counseling, Lee
Beaman, Matt Bailey, Topper Glass, as well as retiring board president
Barbara Houser.
Habitat
Springfield will also recognize 24 community partners who have
made special efforts to help drive the Habitat mission of eliminating
poverty housing in Greene County
last year. “Building Lives”
awards will be given to organizations and individuals who demonstrated
special dedication to the Habitat mission and have offered resources to help
Habitat improve housing opportunities for deserving people in need.
New Board of Directors to be inducted:
Byron Pierce, Ann Littell Mills, Jon Risdal, Irick Thurman and Rick
Windes.
